Using Microsoft Word

When you have an assignment that must be typed, you use a word processor. We are using Microsoft Word to practice the import features of a word processor. Most of the features are found in other word processors as well. Some other popular ones include Microsoft Works, ClarisWorks, and WordPerfect.

 

Notes:

 

Toolbar: To customize your toolbar go to the question mark on the toolbar, click the arrow next to it and it should say add or remove buttons. Click it and select your choice!

 

Save/Save as: If you saved something and you don�t know the most current version-you check by the date modified. You can as well sort it by date.

 

 

Sorting Function: Sort by name in ascending or descending order-by size (for organization, you know how much space it takes up), type

 

Creating a new folder: To organize your information (icon: folder)

 

Folder with an arrow pointing upwards-Allows you too go to folders in different levels of your computer.

 

Recycle: It doesn�t delete, it is saved in your recycle can until you actually, physically delete it. Once you delete it from the recycle bin it only deletes the physical address (PHAT-File Allocation Table). It is only permanently deleted when another file takes its space. 

 

Print: If you just want to print a certain part of your document you must highlight the selected area. If you want to print specific pages you must type those pages in the appropriate area (page range).

 

Draft: Before you print the final copy of your paper, you should print it in draft mode (less ink).

 

Page Setup/Paper Size: Select paper size: portrait, landscape

 

Print Preview: So see what your document looks like before you print it and it saves a lot of time and effort.

 

Font-Text Effect: Useful for PowerPoint presentation, slideshows, websites etc. We use it for anything that is visual, not to be printed. (Las Vegas Lights�)

 

Kerning (Format-Font): Making adjustments to the letter so it�s pleasing to the eye.

 

Position: Lower or raise the font

 

Widow/Orphan Control (Format/Paragraph/Line and Page Breaks): In a paragraph the first line is separated from its and goes to the next page (widow). In a paragraph the last line goes to the next page (orphan).

 

Insert Date and Time: When you write things a lot it automatically updates. (You can insert the date and time so it automatically comes up.)

 

Edit: Shows the combinations of different functions

 

Effects: It changes the way your font appears (engrave, emboss, hidden, superscript�)

 

Borders: Format-Borders and Shading-You can put a border around a specific word or the page etc. You can customize the size, color, texture and so forth.  One a page border you can use art borders. You can customize which part of the border you wish to keep. In order to see if your border looks fine you print preview.

 

Margins: Under file-page setup you have the ability to customize your margins. Either the left, right, top, or bottom.

 

Paper Source: You chose a tray and each tray contains a different item.

 

Undo Typing and Repeat Typing:        

 

Bullets: Go to format and click on the style of the bullet. If you want to customize, press customize and select �bullet,� then select the font you wish your bullets would be (webdings, windings�)                                                 

 

Graphics: Clipart, Auto Shapes, Shading, Fill in Backgrounds, Color and Lines�

 

Hyperlink: if you would want to make a hyperlink, right click the picture click hyperlink and type in the website of your choice.

 

Table- Go table and insert table and select the rows (across) and columns (up and down)

Merging Cells-select are a, right click, and merge cells.

Split Cells-Select text, right click and split cells

View � Toolbars � Tables and Borders - Select Paint/Grayscale

Add-Table-Insert Table and Select what you want to add

Automatic Sum- Looks like an �E�

If you make columns or rows out of proportion you can click on the button on the table and it will distribute it evenly.

Borders-click on table

Press the �lighting button� and do whatever you want.

Make a new table and merge cells. In order to change the direction of the words on your cell click on �Change Text Direction� on the toolbar. If you want to reposition it click on �Align�(top center).�
