Literary Terms - Spring


1. Aside- brief timeout, character talks to himself and others don’t hear

2. Soliloquy- long speech inner most thoughts

3. Anachronism- something out of its time

6. Foreshadowing- hint

Julius Caesar- “Beware the ideas of March”

Our town-The Stage Manager’s indications in Act I that this play will discuss marriage and then death clue us in to the direction that George and Emily’s relationship, which is at the center of the play, will take.

A Dolls House- Nora’s eating of macaroons against Torvald’s wishes foreshadows her later rebellion against Torvald.

7. Motif- reoccurring theme

Dolls house- a lot of secrets

Our Town- Cycle of life= birth, youth, love, marriage, death

Julius Caesar- Omens and portents, letters

8. Alliteration- repetition of constant sounds

The Garden Party- windless, warm, without a cloud

9. Allusion- reference to something bible, mythological, literary

Oedipus complex- Oedipus is a god from Greek mythology who is close to is mother but very far from his father

10. Personification-giving human qualities to animals or objects

The story of an hour- "she was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression,”.

11. Pun-a play on words

Julius Caesar- sole-soul “mends the soles”

12. Dramatic irony-when the audience knows more than your characters

13. Verbal irony-a figure of speech in which what is said is the opposite of what is meant

14. Onomatopoeia-musical words, words that sound like the thing they represent.

15. Foil-two characters that are joined but are opposite

16. Epiphany-A comprehension or perception of reality by means of a sudden intuitive realization (light bulb)

17. Theme-a topic of discussion

Our Town-The transience of human life; the importance of companionship; the artificiality of the theater

18. Flashback-interruption in a story by a return to some earlier episode

19.Presentational play-when there’s no scenery so its more revolving around how u imagine it making it easier for you to relate to (our town)

20. Protagonist-The main character in a drama or other literary work.

Our Town- The most significant figure in the play is the Stage Manager, who orchestrates the action onstage and serves as the glue that holds disparate scenes together

21. Antagonist –One who opposes and contends against another; an adversary.

Julius Caesar- Antony and Octavius

22. Point of view-A manner of viewing things; an attitude.

Julius Caesar- the play sustains no single point of view; however, the audience acquires the most insight into Brutus’s mind over the course of the action.

Oedipus Complex- A boy named Larry

23. Pathetic fallacy- The attribution of human emotions or characteristics to inanimate objects or to nature; for example, angry clouds; a cruel wind.
